How to maximize your affiliate marketing income?

October 7, 2019 by Jane Sheeba 8 Comments

How to maximize your affiliate marketing income?

There was a time when people used to blog just to share their experience and ideas about certain things, but with time, that concept has changed a lot.

Now-a-days, blogging is one of the most common ways of earning online. Through affiliate marketing, you can now earn lot of money.

All you need to do is have a blog of your own and you are ready. Affiliate marketing is nothing but earning through commission.

There are certain ecommerce websites that are willing to provide you a commission on each and every sale.

Technically, affiliate marketing does not involve a lot of work and is pretty much simple to get started with.

But earning a significant amount of money through affiliate marketing can be a bit difficult.

To ensure that you have stable affiliate marketing earning, you need to know a few tricks and tips.

Build trust with your readers

Building trust is everything! Having an affiliate link on your blog post is not really good enough to earn you a lot of money.

For this, you will have to build trust between you and your readers.

Being honest and transparent about your work can certainly make your readers trust your blog, and therefore, the products that you post.

Prompt replies to your reader’s questions can also build trust. While doing so ensure that you disclose your traffic and sales coming from the affiliate
marketing.

This will make your readers more attached to the blog, and therefore, increase the chance of clicking your affiliate links.

Monetizing your popular post

Instead of making new posts to promote your affiliate link, find the most popular of the posts that you have.

Now choose a perfect product that will go nicely with your post and put your affiliate link on that post.

This will ensure that you have posted your affiliate link to a page that has high traffic.

To do this you will need to use an analytics tool that will provide you with information about the traffic that comes to your blog posts.

Once you find the posts that have the best traffic, you can start finding affiliate products suitable for your post

Email marketing is the key

Email marketing might seem like a basic way of affiliate marketing but this is the most important of the tools that you can use to increase your traffic and income.

All you have to do is know your customers and their needs, and you will able to deliver the same via email marketing.

Incentives

Affiliate marketing - Incentives for readers

Although this might not work if all your readers are anonymous, but in case you have the user profiles logged into your blog, then you can contact them and offer them incentives, just to ensure that they buy products from you.

Talk to your readers

This is another important point that you need to remember.

While you try to earn from affiliate marketing, you have to make sure that you talk to your readers.

This will sure increase the chances of a sale via your affiliate link.

Try and reply to every single comment on every single blog post. This will allow the users to interact with you through the blog.

Launch of new products

Whenever there is a launch of a new product on your affiliate website, make sure that you let your readers know about it.

You can use your blog posts and email marketing for this purpose. In case there is some bonus offer on your affiliate site, you can also inform your readers via email.

Just make sure that your subject of the email is good enough to attract the reader’s attention and things should work out for you.

Limit your products

Instead of promoting all the products that you find, it is better to promote a limited number of products on your blog.

Not only will this help you to market your affiliate links, but it will also save a lot of time.

Minimizing the list of products that you wish to promote will ensure that you have to concentrate on lesser number of individual posts.

This will help you promote your affiliate link easily.

Using your affiliate link to good effect

To use affiliate links to full potential, it is important that you use your links intelligently.

Ensure that you are using the link at least 3 times on a single blog post.

Do not add your affiliate link after every paragraph, rather try to use them in specific places as this might help you catch your reader’s attention.

Don’t use too many links

Too many affiliate links

Using affiliate links too many times on a single post or using them within the content is not the ideal thing to do.

You have to make sure that your content is not disturbed due to the presence of the affiliate links.

It should not disturb your writing flow in any way possible.

The reader is here to read what you have to share, not just to click on your links, and buy a product.

It is the content that will make your reader interested in the products and not the links, so be careful while using them on your post.

Understand your audience

Not every person is keen to buy products online, so even if you have a lot of readers, it is really important to understand whether your readers are at all interested in buying products online.

Unless they are looking to buy online, you are never going to have a single sale from your affiliate link.

To do so you can put up a questionnaire for your readers, or may be mail them a poll to understand their reaction about the online purchase.

So, as you can understand, it is all about knowing your users and making them interested in your posts.

You have to think about engaging your readers to your blog first, provide them with products that will be useful to them and only then will you be able to increase your earnings from the affiliate marketing.

When I was just starting out (many years ago), there was a lot of hype around social media. A lot of the advice focused around adding social media widgets to our blog's.

This caused several issues.

Firstly, social media widgets would usually display follower counts. This is great for social proof if you've got a big following.

But since I was just getting started - this quickly turned into negative social proof.

Secondly, visitors were leaving the site and getting distracted. Follower growth was extremely slow despite rapid traffic growth.

The point at which things really turned around for me was when I started building an email list. 100 email subscribers > 2,000 Twitter followers.

Now, let me be clear. I'm not saying social media marketing isn't going to help your blog - it is. Just in a different way.

Since email is the most effective way of reaching my audience (some niches do vary), I keep the focus on building my email list and encourage my subscribers to follow me on social networks after they've signed up.

The first ever blogging issue I had was to think that all my customers were like me and had the same issues as me.

I had been a professional advertising person all my 35+ years. When I started blogging, my target audience was also professionals, who are now into online business.

I wanted to write on content marketing for them. I thought people wanted to know more about what’s and why’s of content marketing.

But very soon I realized something that changed the way I approached my blogging. I saw that solo professionals-turned-entrepreneurs were a clear and specific audience.

But, their mindsets and psychology made them very different from me, and each other.

Not all had the same mindsets. Some wanted easier workloads than blogging would allow.

Some wanted faster results than blogging would allow. Some had a procrastination problem. Or, a self- discipline problem. Some were always unsure if their tactics were correct.

Some never continued longer than one week in any tactics and so delayed their own success.

I realized that it was not content marketing that people struggled with. It was the mindset and psychology of solopreneur content marketing.

The content marketing was what they were doing. It was the instrument of their success path. But their mindsets were their bottlenecks. Their saboteurs of success.

I changed my approach. I began writing more to help address the mindset-pains that content marketing was throwing up for solopreneurs.

That changed the whole trajectory of my business.

As a novice blogger, it was very easy to register a domain name, select an economical hosting provider and set-up a template based website.

But, after few months of consistent blogging, my blog has started to grow exponentially and faced issues like ‘higher Server response time’ and Database overloading.

As a financial blogger, I may be good at writing useful content for my blog. But, do not have an expertise to resolve these technical challenges.

Hence, to overcome these challenges, I had to take the help of a professional team (BHAD) for Blog/database maintenance, Speed optimization and customization.

When I first started blogging, I didn’t know the blog post format.

I found out about Jon Morrow’s guest blogging class and signed up for it. In all candor, I didn’t progress as far as guest blogging opportunities, however, I learned SO much about the blog post format.

I wouldn’t be the blogger I am today without their instruction. I remember arguing. I am an English teacher; I certainly thought I knew how to write.

However, I might have known how to write an essay but not how to write a blog post.

It was an expensive class but worth every penny. I’ll forever be grateful for the tutelage.

If your readers want to know more about the overlap between an essay format and a blog post format, they can find more information here https://www.mostlyblogging.com/essay-plan/.

I struggled to gain blog traffic as a newbie blogger. My solution involved both promoting other bloggers and commenting on other blogs.

Promoting other bloggers on my blog and through social media built bonds.

My new blogging buddies promoted me on their blogs and through social media, increasing my blog traffic.

Blog commenting strengthened my friendships and drove organic traffic via folks who enjoyed my comments, clicked through and visited my blog.

Both strategies are a cool 1-2 punch for driving traffic as a beginner blogger.

When I first started blogging over on blogger (the Google platform) my first challenge was understanding how it all worked. I hadn’t encountered any bloggers and really started alone.

Then after I got to know some great folks (bloggers) who I am still friends with today, I began to learn from them.

Back then I met Ileane Smith, Ryan Biddulph, Mayura DaSilva, Donna Merrill and Brenda Pace.

They were my mentors and Mayura is now my techie when I run into issues. I’ve met Donna and her husband in person several times in my travels.

Back then, I started reading from them that you had to have WordPress site. So, I jumped in!

The migration was a nightmare! I used a host provider that was from a 3rd party, never again! I switched to HostGator with 24 tech support and I still use them today.

Another struggle I encountered was setting up an RSS feed. Mayura came to rescue and helped me with that as well.

So, what is my advice for new bloggers? Get to know some bloggers who can help you along the way and realize you need to spend some money in your blog.

Read up as much as you can to learn all you can and last, but not least, have FUN!

The biggest struggle I had in my initial blogging days was my English. I had my schooling in government schools and that too Hindi medium.

I wanted to write awesome blog posts but my English always stopped me. I could never write good sentences, couldn’t use the impressive vocabulary and my writing flow was terrible.

This is a very common issue in India where people have the skills to express their thoughts, they have immense knowledge but because of this language barrier their cannot impress their audience.

I figured out in 2013 (after doing blogging for 2 years) that I will have to improve my English if I want to see myself in one of the top bloggers in India.

So I joined a local institute here in my city itself and spent 3 months improving my Grammar and writing skills.

Later I spent a lot of time to read many blogs on writing, copywriting and soon I improved my skills.

So from my point of view, we all have some strengths and some weaknesses. It’s your duty to identify them and work on them if you want the awesome results. I found that weakness and overcame it with time. 🙂

When I completed my CFP (Certified Financial Planner), I thought of starting a financial blog as others in my profession have their own finance blog.

Hence, I am being a Non-Technical guy, the biggest issue, I faced was which platform to use and how to start.

Because at that time, I was unaware about the WordPress, Themes, Plugins, SEO or Blog Speed Issues.

Hence, with blind and little bit of knowledge, I started my journey of blogging.

However, after 4-5 months of my blogging profession, one thing I learned is that being a technical fit to handle my blog is the first step of successful blogging.

Hence, purchased own domain, purchased Genesis Themes and with my trial and error I built my own blog which may look nice to me during those days.

Later I noticed that we have to concentrate on some backend technical stuffs like SEO, speed optimization, or the layout of the blog. However, these tasks are beyond my head.

Hence, luckily I came across Jane Sheeba. Slowly I handed her the backend task of design, speed optimization and blog management.

This way, I resolved my difficulty of managing the technical stuff of blogging and purely concentrating on writing content and acquiring the clients for my business.

The first problem was to get initial traffic. I started by writing relevant and contemporary content. The aim was to write content that people would search for.

At the same time, you would find articles about personal finance in prominent business dailies and there are many good personal finance blogs too.

To stand out and for better organic search response, I wrote deep and well-researched articles. I tried to cover aspects and niches that weren’t covered elsewhere.

To build visibility, I reached out and contributed to many business dailies. Sharing content on the various social media channels also helped.

You require a lot of persistence and patience because initially, it is like talking to the wall.

You keep writing content and there is almost no traffic. Fortunately, if stuck with the plan and the traffic picked up gradually.

My first blogging struggle was to start making money!

Everyone tell you to write good content, create a nice blog design, or build a mailing list. All good suggestions….But when can you start to actually earn a revenue?

It really depends from bloggers to bloggers, and their online approach.

My suggestion is to start making connections, since the beginning.

Good relationships are important in life, as well as in the internet business.

A good part of my revenue, comes from connections I created via email, social or Skype.

It can be a sponsored post, a project collaboration, a social media amplification campaign, or someone hiring me for writing a piece of content.

So yes, if you are new to blogging, be sure to start building your connections empire!

As like every blogging beginner, I too struggled in getting the traffic to my blogs. My wish is to drive the audience from the search engines as they are exact targeted traffic I always look for.

In the initial phase of my blogging journey, I made the content without doing any keyword research and was not looking at the blog posts written by the competitors. That was a big blunder!

I have realized this blogging mistake and started doing the keyword research to find out the low-competitive, rankable keywords. Also, I used to have a look at my competitors’ content to make my stuff better.

Once I have started doing the keyword research, inserting the long tail, low-comp search phrases and having an eye on the articles of my business opponents, I’m getting a ton of visitors to my blogs.

Thus, I would like to insist the emerging bloggers focus on picking a handful of appropriate keywords and making content quality superior to their competitors.

Increasing traffic from search engines: Yes, that’s the biggest struggle (almost every blogger faces) including me.

Even in the year 2019, Google is never short of releasing messy algorithm updates (recently released core algorithm update) to take down the traffic of most of the sites.

That’s why you always need to keep an eye on fixing your website issues (including technical and SEO related issues).

It’s always better to create long form and really detailed content instead of publishing a 500 word article.

Not only, search engines like Google reward such high-quality detailed articles but your target audience will also get benefitted from them.

Above all, don’t put all your eggs in one basket and try to diversify your traffic sources by being active on social media sites, blogging forums, Quora and so on.

I still remember the days I used to blog continuously and wait for people to comments on my posts.

I was foolish enough to think that out of nowhere, they will come and read my posts. It was just a new blog, and the information I provided was already published 100+ times on the internet.

In the end, I got only spam comments. But I decided I should figure out what went wrong and how I should overcome it.

These are the things I did:

  1. If I’m going to write about a topic, then I should Google and read the top 10 results for that, make my article is better than that, or updated than that.
  2. I can’t expect people to read my articles at the moment, no worries, but I should figure out the ways I can send my articles to them to read instead.
  3. I started commenting on various tech blogs; I asked them questions even when I knew the answers. It helped me a lot to build a connection initially.
  4. Orkut was the only popular social network at that time, maybe MySpace as well? But I preferred to use Yahoo! Answers for that. Whenever we answer any question, they have this section for keeping a ‘source’ link to that, and I just picked the articles I published, the ones which got the solution and kept it there.
  5. By the end of that year, Facebook started to grow, and I began to add as many bloggers as possible. I badly wanted them to know about me, make sure they know my name and that I have a blog.

These are the five things I kept doing, and over a while, I achieved my results, but all these took time, but our blog’s growth matched it overall.

My first blogging struggle is understanding keyword research. I have done this wrong for a very long period.

When you don’t aware of keyword research, you end up writing stuff which has no searches so it doesn’t make any sense.

In this case, people are only going to read your stuff when you share on social media.

There is no search traffic to your blog which makes you sad. I mean making me sad.

I read many articles to understand keyword research and ON page SEO stuff. And I thought now I understand but I didn’t.

When I started blogging, Events bloggers are making a hell lot of money and there are so many screenshots with real-time traffic stats at social media.

So I and Mohd Arif (my blogging buddy) decided to do event blogging.

We put our all efforts to rank it and make more money. And ending up with nothing.

After getting failed so badly, I analyzed all competitors’ blogs which ranked to figure out the reason of our failure or to know what we did wrong.

That’s how I learned I am doing all wrong, targeted such keywords that no one is searching or I must say there is no keyword at all in the title, URL, content.

We did event blogging once, but it was a game-changer for us.

In one line, I will say I believe in implementing and observing even I am not a good observer.

And that’s how I overcome with my blogging problems.

When I started my blog, like most novice bloggers, I struggled with getting visitors on my blog.

However, that changed when I started interacting with other bloggers by visiting their blogs, commenting on the latest blog posts, and sharing it on social media.

Most of the bloggers reciprocated with a visit to my blog and dropped a comment too. Not only that – most even promoted my blog and posts to their followers on social media.

Gradually my blogging circle expanded and my struggle to get visitors to my blog ended.

Concentrating on a specific blogging niche was one of the first struggles that I faced.

When I started, there were not many discussions about the importance of choosing the right niche.

Being a newbie it was very easy to get carried away with every topic you come across.

I also did the same mistake and as a result, my first blog got totally messed up with topics like personal finance, technology, recipes, life hacks, and what not!

And, gradually it felt challenging to continue the blog in that way.

After some discussions, I decided to split the blog into two separate ones – a recipe blog and another for personal finance, life hacks, etc.

As the niche was specified, it became easier to continue both the blogs with a clear focus.

Choosing the right and specified niche is the first most important factors while starting a new blog.

Not only it helps to sort things initially, but also helps to keep you focused for the long run.

As a beginner, I have faced multiple struggles. And I am sure these are common for everyone.

Although money was one of the biggest problems as we need that to buy hosting and domain, I don’t think that was the real struggle.

What I realized later is that distraction was the biggest problem at that time.

Most beginners start a blog after watching others success or inspired by someone.

In that case, they try to follow the same niche or idea and simply jump into blogging. The same thing happened with me as well and the result was an obvious failure.

Initially, we don’t know what kind of blogging we can actually do, what is the exact purpose and expectation from blogging.

Although making money is the prime goal for many of us, but many beginners don’t even know how many ways one can monetize their blogs.

E.g. when I started blogging back in 2009 I was aware of Google AdSense only. Then I started blogging to make money from AdSense and that took me to a roller coaster ride.

But when I came to know about affiliate marketing, I simply realized that affiliate marketing is what suits my blogging style and then I never looked back.

So, if I have to summarise my learnings from various struggles of my blogging journey then they would be:

  1. Decide first whether you want to start a blog to generate income or just for fun or hobby. In case it’s for fun, you are free to do anything. But if you are serious enough to create a website which will earn money for you then you have to know how many ways a blog can generate income first.
  2. Choose the niche which you can write content on till you die. If you are not comfortable with the topic, then it will be difficult for you to continue. You can hire content writers, but as a beginner, most people don’t know how to utilize them and rank a website.
  3. Build a solid plan after thorough research and then start with WordPress from day 1. Don’t waste time waiting for the day you start earning money, do it from the first day itself. It’s pure business and you will get success only if you are ready to invest from day 1.

My first and the biggest blogging struggle was the one in which I struggled to find my ideal blogging niche. It wasted a lot of my blogging time (at least a year to be precise).

For my main blog DigitalGYD, the niche happened gradually but with so much wasted time I developed a system that now saves me a lot of time finding and selecting niches for my other niche blogs.

My SOP for finding blog niches includes multiple sources like Amazon’s best product pages, sites like Wikihow and more to come up with initial niche ideas.

Then they go through an array of tests like market research, checking Google trends, monetization opportunities, opportunity gap to rank, and exploring my interest in the niche so that I can blog for a longer period without getting exhausted.

I’ve documented a detailed 6000+ word guide on finding your blogging niche that helps me find out profitable niches I can vet my time and resources on.

During my initial days of blogging, I had just started writing and was busy developing content for the site. Little did I know about file sizes (Image sizes), Genesis framework etc... After a few months, I could notice that the site was starting to slow down, Loading times becoming more and it was really frustrating.

Having very little technical knowledge, I took professional help from Jane Sheeba. I think that was one of the best decisions I have made for the site. She moved my site and made it run on Genesis framework and also did speed optimization to improve the loading time. It was a real turning point and the traffic started to spike from thereon. Its very important that things like hosting, server etc... is handled by a professional team.

What is affiliate marketing? How to succeed!

April 20, 2017 by Jane Sheeba 16 Comments

What is affiliate marketing? How to succeed!

Affiliate marketing = Passive income! There’s nothing more mesmerising than this for anyone looking to make money online.

Of course, the ability to earn more money with much little work is certainly attractive.

Affiliate Marketing is one such income stream where you can earn money literally while you sleep – doesn’t that sound too good to be true?

While there are numerous ways to earn money online affiliate marketing has gained the interest of a lot of internet marketers for many obvious reasons (more on that below).

What is affiliate marketing?

So let’s see what is affiliate marketing – the definition!

Affiliate marketing is an opportunity where you earn money by promoting other’s product or services. Basically when you come across a product or a service you like, you can promote it to your readers.

While doing so, you can earn a commission! And that’s the beauty of affiliate marketing.

You share something you like and when people go by your recommendation, you earn a commission!

Product owners like to spread the word about their products.

Instead of them selling their product as a one man army, if there is a group of affiliate marketers promoting a particular product, it is a lot easier for the product owner to get many more sales as compared to doing it all alone.

And for this comfort, product owners pay a certain percentage of the sale to the affiliate marketers for their work (recommendation of the product/spreading the word about the product).

So it is a win-win for the product owner and the affiliate marketer.

So how does this work as a “system”?

A product owner cannot simply let others promote a product without monitoring the sale numbers made by the affiliates.

The same is the case for the affiliate marketers – they need to know how many sales they made and how much commission they have earned.

There needs to be a “system” – a system to generate unique affiliate links for each affiliate marketer; to track each sale performed by an affiliate marketer, to calculate commission, to make the payouts and so on!

Usually when the product owners launch their products via a platform the “sale” platform integrates the affiliate system as well.

For instance if we are talking about an online course, there are a few ways in which you can launch it as a product owner – I mean you can use any of the available tools.

As an example, if you end up using a membership software like Digital Access Pass it has built-in affiliate features.

So you can launch your course along with an affiliate program and have others promote your course and you can pay your affiliates for each sale they get you!

As an affiliate marketer, if you are going to promote a tool, a theme, a software or anything – usually either the company has their own affiliate system, or they have tie up with other affiliate marketing systems.

As an example, I’m an affiliate of Evernote – and each time I promote it, I get “points” which I can use to redeem pro account for myself or as a gift to others.

This is Evernote’s very own affiliate system.

On the other hand, I am also an affiliate of StudioPress themes, and their affiliate program is managed by Shareasale.

Shareasale is an affiliate marketing network that hosts a varied range of products and connects product owners and affiliate marketers. Clickbank is another such network.

As an affiliate marketer, you will have to “join” these networks in order to get access to your specific affiliate link

The advantages of affiliate marketing

Talking about the advantages, or why many internet marketers like this particular income stream – you don’t have to create a product or offer a service in order to make money.

This also makes you free from other headaches like product delivery, support, updates and other issues related to the product that needs to be handled.

Any product needs to be developed first (which is a BIG step to getting it out and making money from it). And then you need to find a way to deliver it to your clients.

If it is a digital product you will need a platform to host it, and then make it available for your customers to either download it (like an e-book) or access it via a login (like a course).

The systems to host a downloadable product or to host a membership like-site with the software and other fancy stuff definitely costs quite some money.

And then once people get to buy your product, it doesn’t end there. There will be queries, and support issues that you will need to handle.

And, I forgot about the challenges you might face with the payment processing systems while you launch your product for sale.

With affiliate marketing you don’t have to deal with any of these!

You don’t have to create a product, you don’t have to worry about hosting it or wonder how to deliver it to your audience, and you don’t have to deal with any support issues.

Do I encourage you to stay away from creating your own product? A BIG NO!

But it is quite understandable and obvious that affiliate marketing is a relatively easier way to make money – and mostly as passive income.

Having said that, you should not completely rely on affiliate marketing for your revenue. I always believe in NOT putting all your eggs in one basket.

How to get started with affiliate marketing?

In order to become an affiliate marketer you need get started the right way! If you get that right, and follow some basic, yet crucial strategies, it is not rocket science to earn via affiliate marketing.

Now there are a couple of ways in which you can go by this! You can either have a website, or you can do it without even having a website.

But I highly recommend having a website since that is the only way in which you can provide some useful information to your readers/customers rather than merely posting your affiliate links in social media platforms as status updates!

Setting up your niche website

As to starting a website – blogging is a great way to go by. Publishing informational articles on a topic, tutorials about the tools you wish to promote etc. can be only via a blog.

Next, let’s talk about niche. Once again, there are a couple of ways to go by this.

You can either start a niche site – specific to one particular super-focused niche where you only promote products from that niche.

A good example is this:

Niche site example

In such a case, you set up a niche website, write a handful of helpful articles about the products you would like to promote, and basically also publish reviews about the products.

Amazon niche sites fall into this category.

In any case, in order to set up a website you will need the following: A domain name, hosting, choose a CMS, a simple theme – and things like that.

I cover these details in the following Chapters: Chapter 2 and Chapter 3.

Setting up your email marketing forte

You will need to collect email addresses of the traffic you receive – build an email list – so you have an asset!

For this, you need to have an email marketing service like Aweber or GetResponse so you can collect email addresses and send out autoresponder emails to your list subscribers.

If you think about delaying your list building, think again. The faster you do it, the better.

The more you delay building your email list, the more money you leave on the table.

You have to make sure you capture the email ids of your “casual” visitors if you want to make them your repeat visitors.

Here are the steps involved in building your email list –

(a) Choose an email autoresponder service

There are quite a few options in choosing your email list building service. It totally depends on what features you would absolutely require for your kind of business!

Aweber worked for me.

Aweber sign up

So did GetResponse. Some might find Mailchimp to be the right option.

Whatever you decide to choose make sure you weigh in your requirements or read comparative reviews by others who have used it (here’s a comparison of Aweber and Mailchimp).

You don’t have to choose an autoresponder service just because it is popular, or just because it is recommended by a popular blogger. Only you know better.

In any case, you will have to sign up for an account (free or paid). And then set up your “list” – the list is where you will collect the email addresses.

(b) Put up sign up forms

In order to make your readers sign up, you will need to put up sign up forms on your website.

You can simply grab the forms from your email autoresponder service or you could use a plugin like Thrive Leads to get it done.

You will need to entice your audience to sign up – you can do this by providing a free e-book, or a course or anything that works for your kind of audience.

(c) Keep your list subscribers engaged

By building your list, you turn your casual visitors into your list subscribers. But that doesn’t mean they are yours forever.

You should continue to offer value to your list subscribers.

In particular, if you are into promoting your affiliate products to them, merely sending out promotional emails will only annoy them.

Sooner or later (usually instantly), they will unsubscribe.

How to choose the best affiliate marketing programs?

When there are too many choices it often leads to confusion, right? Right.

But it also means that you can make your choice that exactly suits your needs from the wide range of options available.

When it comes to choosing the right affiliate marketing program for you, rather than looking at the affiliate programs available you have to analyse the features.

What affiliate marketing features should you look at?

Here are the ones:

  1. The commission structure
  2. The commission value
  3. The affiliate system (and its structure)

Of course, since I am talking about the features of the affiliate marketing system, I have stopped with these. In fact, above all these come the “quality” of the product you are going to recommend.

That comes first, remember that.

(a) The commission structure

As an affiliate marketer, you focus on money and that’s totally OK. To make the most out of your affiliate marketing efforts you have to choose those products that offer you a good commission structure.

There are products that have a one-time fixed commission.

Studiopress one time commission

And there are recurring commissions.

Aweber recurring commission

And then, there are tiered commissions.

A recurring commission is more profitable than a one-time commission for sure. But you have to consider other factors as well (more on this below).

Tiered commissions are certainly cool, as long as the product you promote stands up to the value!

(b) The commission value

The commission value is the actual amount you earn per sale. And you need to get into the “calculator” mode in order to avoid the looks deceiving you.

For instance, a 30% commission on a $200 product is much more valuable than a 60% commission on a $30 product.

A one-off $200 commission might look like a big thing; but a $30 recurring commission for life is much more valuable, right?

So you have to do the math right!

(c) The affiliate system

When it comes to the affiliate marketing system, you have to make your choice very wisely.

You will have to go for a system that is first of all easy to sign up and get going.

There are affiliate programs that require manual approval – this may sound like a tedious step but such programs usually have high class affiliate marketers in their team, which is a plus.

You should also see that the system provides you with the stuff you need to promote their product – graphics, and promo materials.

Tracking is a crucial thing and hence you should see that the affiliate marketing system has a neat tracking system available!

Usually tracking is done via a dedicated affiliate link. A dashboard with earning stats (as to which of your campaigns resulted in more sales) is definitely a plus.

Finally, and more importantly, the payout system! You have to see that the minimum payout is not a BIG amount so you wait endlessly to get paid.

Also you should see the mode of payment or the payment options available to you. Is it via Paypal, Cheque or a direct bank transfer?Clicksor payment details

Are there any bank/transaction charges involved, and what is the cut?

You have to analyse things like these before choosing an affiliate program!

What are the key factors to succeed with affiliate marketing?

Now, here comes the crucial part – the key to succeeding with affiliate marketing.

So you find a product you like. No, wait. You find a product that has an affiliate program which pays you a decent amount of money in affiliate commission.

So you join the program, grab your affiliate link, write a blog post about how great the product is, throw in your affiliate links a few times in the post, publish the post, promote it in social media and voila – you start to earn commission!

Let me wake you up from the dream – because that’s what most bloggers think affiliate marketing is. This is NOT affiliate marketing or how it works as long as you want to succeed.

Here are the key things you need to succeed as an affiliate marketer.

(a) Only promote high quality products (no compromise on this)

When you look for affiliate programs to join, don’t settle down for mediocre products.

Of course, the money might look a lot tempting, but by promoting a sub-standard product you will ruin your reputation.

And certainly, you cannot succeed long term going that route.

So don’t ever compromise on the quality of the product you choose to promote as an affiliate.

(b) Be helpful

This is why I highly recommend having a website (a blog, to be precise).

Of course, you can join a handful of affiliate programs, grab your affiliate links and post them on social media or distribute via email.

But this does not help the end user who you expect to click on your affiliate link and buy that product.

Writing a product review will help. Making a comparison among the leading products in a niche will be much better.

Here’s an example by Adam of Blogging Wizard.

Aweber Mailchimp comparison by Adam

Writing a few tutorials on how to use the product will be much more useful.

Here’s an example by Fabrizio of Magnet 4 Blogging.

Long tail pro by Fabz

Publishing detailed tutorials on using the product will help readers take a look at the backend of the product before actually buying it.

Such tutorials will also help your readers with any questions they have about using the product after they’ve purchased it.

(c) Build trust

With affiliate marketing, trust is the key to succeed. It helps you with succeeding in the long term.

If you are someone who promotes crappy products for the sake of commission you will easily ruin the trust your readers have on you.

And trust is something that takes years to build but seconds to lose/ruin. Once your readers stop trusting you, there’s no turning back.

Remember, your affiliate marketing success depends a lot on the trust your readers have on you.

They have to trust you on your recommendations – otherwise, even if they are a little doubtful, they won’t be clicking on your affiliate links to make any purchases.

(d) It is not about the money

Although affiliate marketing is a cool income stream you should not be too focused on money.

Of course it is natural to look at the commission – even in this post, I’ve shared how to choose the best affiliate programs that have great commission schemes.

However, remember it is not all about the money. Quality comes first. That will lead your readers to trust you and that’s BIG.

That’s the key to your affiliate marketing success.

Building trust is so hard if you are so focused on money because not all affiliate programs that give you great commissions have great products.

So you have to be very careful about choosing the products. Also you have to be strategic with your promotional efforts!

Punching your readers in the face with your promotions clearly tells them that all you want is their money. That being the case, you ain’t getting that money.

When your readers can clearly see that you are after their money, this will repel them away from your blog.

Maintain a good balance between offering value and promoting stuff!

There you go – I really hope this post will help you understand what affiliate marketing is and how to get started with it. I have also shared the keys to succeed with affiliate marketing.

Now, all you have to do is to get started with affiliate marketing and succeed!
