Have you killed enough time on the internet reading about time management? And do all those hundreds of articles say the same thing again and again?
While all those conventional tips do work, there are some really important things, that are not talked so much about, but are still highly crucial.
Early to bed and early to rise
Early to bed and early to rise makes you healthy, wealthy and wise. Well, that’s an old saying which is so very true. Apart from becoming healthy, wealthy and wise, you also can manage your time better this way. You may have this question in mind:
I know that it is good to sleep for about 8 hours a day. So what if I just choose to go to bed at 2 in the night and wake up later? I work until 2. And I resume after I wake up? So where do I miss time management?
Well you seem to be right but you are not.
The world doesn’t wake up your way. So you might not sleep sound after the world has woke up. You will have your own responsibilities, schedules etc. that will not allow you to wake up late. The result will be that you will be left with insufficient sleep. This will attack your health.
You will feel sleepy and will be sloppy the whole day, without being able to concentrate on work, which means you won’t be productive. Thus you simply kill your time doing nothing useful or productive.
Another fact is that although you can stay without sleep for late hours, you cannot work with all the efficiency at sleeping hours.
So in general, early to bed and early to rise is a good discipline.
Whatever you know about time management doesn’t matter. I mean, you can read 1000 articles on the internet about time management, you can attend seminars, webinars, read books, practice skills and so on.
But if for one second you get the temptation to postpone your assignment for a football match or for an extended sleep and can’t resist it, all your knowledge about time management has proved to be nothing.
Here, it is your will power that keeps you from not procrastinating and helps you to resist the temptation. Your will power, in this case, keeps you focused, keeps you determined and helps you to avoid procrastinating crucial tasks.
Unnecessary talking is not only a very obvious time waster but it is also the one which is not paid much attention. You can simply spend 2 hours on the phone discussing about your friend’s dog and your day is already gone.
You will never realize how fast the time flies when you get into a gossip about your roommate’s girlfriend.
Talking not only takes a lot of your time but it takes a lot of your energy too. Will it not be wise to save your time and energy for something more useful rather than discussing for three hours about your boss wearing a red tie for a blue suit?
You don’t have to do it all by yourself! That isn’t fair too. Just delegate and do it correctly. Target appropriate persons with appropriate skills and divide your work. This will nicely work for both home and business related jobs.
You don’t have to have a hectic schedule all days. If you know a person who can mange emails better, let him/her do the follow up of your project. If a person has the skill of talking to people nicely then just let him/her do the ground work on marketing.
But just be cautious, do not assign a work to the wrong person. That will consume two times the time that will be actually needed.
Let the clock tick by itself
Finally, do not be obsessed with managing time. The clock ticks, yes it does. So what? Let it tick. Don’t just always tick with the clock.
Take the time management crow off your mind and do your tasks as planned. Thinking about time management too much is an excellent time killer. It is easy this way to daydream, to read on and on in the internet about time management, read on and on books on time management, search for free and paid software to manage time effectively and so on.
So leave the ticking clock at the back of your mind and give your butt a kick to start!
