Why Is Time Management Important For Students?

woman out of timeStudent life is in general hectic, for some reason. As a student, you have classes to attend, assignments to complete, prepare for practical sessions, do project work and amidst these you also have your own life to have fun and enjoy.

The last thing is so important because, parties, get together, picnics, hiking, dating and all other fun are so important and they can’t be missed especially in the student phase of the life.

So in general it is very important for a student, more than any business man to learn how to manage time effectively.

Good discipline

Having a well-organized schedule is a good discipline. It is nice not to choke yourself on too much unplanned and unexpected stuff and rather follow a disciplined and organized work/personal life schedule.

Work when you need to work, study when you need to study and have fun when you need to do so. All this can be achieved only with efficient time management. If you don’t care about managing your time, your life won’t be organized.

Helps to develop skills

Time management is in itself a great skill. Added to that you can develop many more skills when you are a student who can manage time effectively.

When you manage your time better, you have some good time that is set aside for learning and practicing new skills, otherwise you will be all overwhelmed with just attending classes and doing assignments. This is because while in a school or a college you have more opportunities for developing new skills which are otherwise not so easy to catch up.

There are games sessions, language sessions, self improvements sessions and so on. So in order to make use of these opportunities and learn skills of your interest you need to get yourself some free time. This is only possible if you manage time effectively.

Gives time for life

Leisure time

Life, especially during college days is something that no one should miss. Yes, you can never get those times, friends, energy and the buzz again any time later. So as a college student you must take all possible efforts to enjoy your own life, that’s an order! Have as much fun as possible, party crazy, socialize, go to movies, join the sports club and the hiking club and so on.

Live your life to the fullest so that you won’t regret later. But how is this possible? If you manage your time effectively, you will be able to set aside time for all of these activities, alongside your studies. With effective time management you will be more productive in less time.

Crisis management

Everyone face crisis some time or the other. You may fall sick, someone in your family may need you urgently, your friend may be having a hard time and need your help, you may have an un-announced exam and so on.

As a student, you have no other chance than simply facing it boldly. You cannot for sure run away and hide somewhere. Setting aside time for unexpected events is one of the crucial parts of managing time.

Equip yourself for the real world

As a student, you have a lot more of real life to face after your student life. Most probably, it would be a job or a business for which you need to equip yourself. Not only your training or expertise in your field is enough but an organized life is more than anything.

It builds a brand for you, it exposes you as a dignified person, it elevates your caliber in the society when you become a man or a woman with a career. You get your colleagues, employees and employers to stop, turn back and notice you, just by being organized and maintaining predictable schedules. In short, you will reap good rewards later in your life by practicing time management in your student days.

  1. In college, there are so many extra curricular activities that you can possibly join. Most these, if chosen carefully, will really mold you into a well-rounded person. But ofcourse, you only have so much time to keep up with all these kinds of activities. So yes Time management is essential. You don’t have to get it all right the first time, just manage one day/ week/month/sem at a time.

    • I second you on that Felicia. It is very essential to participate in extra curricular activities. Those give a lot of self confidence and refreshes the body and mind of a student.

  2. Hey Jane, just so you are aware of this your site content is all pushed together to the left side. It is just your content and author bio – i’m using Chrome not sure if it’s my end or yours.

But time management is by far the most important feature a student needs to acquire and acquire quickly. It is second to no after management your money. But it is so easy to put that essay to the last minute before it needs to be handed in. It is something many students get better at throughout school.

    • Yup I have fixed that “content being pushed to one side” issue. Hope it is good now?

Yes students are very well used to handle (or be mishandled by) the last minute pressure.

  3. Hi Jane,
This post is similar to the words of wisdom for a person like me who always crib at the end of dearth of time to complete syllabus on time. The pointers mentioned in the post are apt. Time management is indeed the key for attaining a successful life ahead. If we know how to manage our time, we surely can handle any other thing in life, be it success or a failure. Thanks for sharing such a valuable post.

  4. If students learn time management in their college life only, it really will be helpful to them when they get into professional life. Some habits are better when learnt quickly with time. Thanks for the share.

    • “Some habits are better when learnt quickly with time” – well said Abhishek. Thanks for your comment.

      • Yes, I do completely agree with Abhishek’s comment.. college life is the best time when students get to learn the basic formula of success-TIME MANAGEMENT. With just one thing correct, all professional life gets way better. Btw Good post Jane. :)

  5. A lot of things one does as a student impacts his/her adulthood and professional life. These tips are very important to be followed. It is very important too, to have a guru or a guide who can help reinforce these principles. Often however, one does not receive this valuable guidance until it is too late. Habits once acquired are very hard to break. Nice post as usual, Jane.

  6. Hi Jane! Time management is such a critical factor in a student’s life without it, it would be impossible to be well-rounded and disciplined. It’s true that this is a great way to equip them for the demands of the corporate world. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Students must learn to be dynamic by practicing proper time management skills to better equip them for what lies ahead. The ability to manage one’s time goes beyond completing tasks on time, it also means gaining fulfillment from your ability to play several roles and acquire other skills simply because you know how to spend your time wisely. Thanks!

  8. Most of my friends now complain to have wasted much of their student life due to poor time management. You have mentioned great pointers here for students; it will help them maintain study, play and health balance.

  9. Time management is very important to students because it trains them how to prioritize. Similar to having a job, students need to make ends meet when it comes to doing their projects, assignments as well as involving themselves in activities to achieve holistic personal growth.

    • Very well said Kelly. Being a student is so much like having a job and the good “organizational” habit developed during this student period will be very much useful when the students go and join a “work” environment.

  10. Students need to be able to balance their time wisely. Aside from academics, it is good to involve yourself in extra curriculars which will prove how well-rounded of an individual you are.

  11. Though it is also important to engage in extra-curricular activities, students must be able to juggle these with their academic work. Time management is the key to be able to balance these two aspects of being a student.

  12. Students must know the value of time early on so they won’t be caught up in really ugly situations when they get older. Time management is needed to be disciplined and responsible.

  13. Time management is what needs to be learnt at this time. Its even harder when you have to work and school at the same time! It helps to manage how business is done if time is valued I have found. Discipline and a commitment to succeed are the keys
